On the Horizon
This series began as an experiment in play, smearing pastel ground on small scraps of foam core with no intentional design or imagery as a goal. I layered pastel on the small surfaces, continually rotating the image, undecided on orientation or outcome. I discovered a hint of landscape revealing itself despite the fact that I wasn’t using a photo reference. The emergence of the landscape guided me in this body of work.
Previous to this series, I had been working with narrative and figurative imagery, heavily depending on reference photos but still inventing a new space and environment. The deep space in my figurative work is an imagined landscape which subconsciously inspired the abstracted landscape in this new series.
“On the horizon” refers to both literal landscape and the concept of forward thinking with the possibility of what the future holds. The works in this series depict both realistic landscapes as well as abstractions, alluding to futures that are both foreseeable and mercurial manifestations.
